So this semester for Interactive Spaces, I was working around the theme of construction. I wanted to put all 3 projects together in one page so I can see the evolution of each project. This modified device is designed to question the semantics of a hard hat. By blocking the vision of the user, the purpose of a hard hat is being confronted with that of a blind fold. However, with the visibility impaired, the device ensure safety as more surface area of the head is protected. Hardhat is also make to explore the perception of reality. Hardland is an interactive installation that explores the issues of construction. Finding the right balance. Relying only on a small piece of nail, these safety hats are balancing on acrylic rods. This act of balancing represent the challenge government bodies faced on the issue of preserving the nature but at the same time, building infrastructure for the progress for the nation. The swaying of the helmets are dependent on the natural wind which could relate to the idea of an uncontrolled development in a country. Hardknocks is a soundscape installation that visualise data on construction sites. The clucking sound of the metal solenoid hitting the hard hat symbolises the number of accidents that took place on a construction project last year. A continuation of the previous project titled ‘Hardland’, this installation relates back to the issue of construction and progress of our nation. Lives are being sacrificed in the name of nation building. A site specific installation, the white hard hat is juxtaposed with the concrete wall, which is the foundation of any construction project.
