New year new strategy, a new me but the same old me. Resolutions are mean to be broken, applies the same to promises and rules. New year resolutions are actually your old ones which you've failed to complete the year before the 2 years ago. That's what happen to me. True story bro. Brothers alike combining their powers to take over the house when their parent's are not in town. I'm too legit to quit when I don't even start a damn thing in the first place. Gangnam is so last year but so am I.
The year 2012, this year, have been a great year for me. I think it's one of my best year so far. So many things I've accomplished in this short 12 months. From graduating from basic military training to my highlight of the year, being in the UK and having my work exhibited at the first ever World Event Young Artists in Nottingham! For a moment now, I've been thinking of the things that I have done for the past few years. Last year I graduated, this year I'm serving the nation. Things happened too fast and sometimes, I wish time could slow down a bit but I know that's impossible. So this year, the 2012, I conclude that this is the most exciting year in my life. By months, the pictures below will do the talking and some words that I will type will be the text you readers mumble in your mouth.
I walked from Changi to the Marina Bay Floating Platform, with a rifle in hand and my heavy load on my back, but most importantly, I achieved something which I thought was impossible at first. I still remember looking at the mirror when we first reached the floating platform and I can see my beard and moustache even though I've shaved the day before. The end of my BMT phase was just another beginning of another phase which promises to be a an exciting and unpredictable one. 2012 began with a bang for me and as I throw my jockey cap up in the air, I know 2012 is going to be a hell of a year.
They say National Service make you realise how important your loved ones are and I totally believe in that statement. My family are my blood and we are bloods till the end.
Right after my Passing Out Parade, there's a 1 week break before I posted to my new unit. It just happens that Alvin from Phunk Studio ask me to take a photo of their latest artwork for the ArtStage Singapore 2012 on one of the day. Of course I couldn't say no and I get to catch a preview of all the artworks before everybody else! Below is the photo that I took and they make it into a poster of a kind, looks great ain't it!
After I got posted to my new unit, I was informed that I will be posted overseas for my new posting. As much as I want to go for the money, I can't leave because there's too much to let go if I left. I was brought into a room where I do nothing but sleep and sleep and do absolutely nothing.
Meanwhile, I was in the Noise Apprenticeship Programme and was mentored by Francis Ng. There was an exhibition where all the TAP apprentices get to show their works. Below is mine. I was inspired by my own situation and being in the army was kinda blessing because I get alot of time to think and ponder what I really want in life. Using camouflage cream as my ink, I paint the canvas with 'I Miss School' in the centre and cover it with my army uniform. This was my way to hide what I really feel inside. It's funny how people started lifting up my uniform to read the words on the canvas. This questions whether an artwork is suppose to be touch? or just viewed as it is.
Francis Ng was amazing in a way that his words inspire us. Below is the other 3 artists that was mentored by Francis as well.
I was invited to showcase my work in a group exhibition. Organised by a group of Laselle students, I was one of 4 artist. It was an eye opener for me and a journey for me as I make new works for this exhibition. Meetings with the curator was also scary because I don't know if she really like my new work and thank god she was okay with it. This exhibition got alot of press as we were interview on Berita Harian and even on Suria news.
The artirts, crews and their lecturers.
I was surprised that suria was into my works and they want to interview me alone. It was an exciting experience and I was nervous all the time when they were taping it. It was hard trying to remember the words to say and 'paiseh' will be the right words to use to describe the experience.
When May came, it came a while, and then it went again. My beloved girlfriend graduated in May '12 and I was lucky I was able to get a chance to see her up on stage receiving that empty thingy. The year before was me on stage graduating but now it was her turn and I couldn't be more prouder.
Congratulation to Juraida for achieving this far. You're a strong women inside and I know one day, you'll be larger than life.
I turned 22 this year and 22 is an even number. For the first time, my beloved surprise me at my house with these lovely cupcakes! Nice one juraida, Nice one. i fell for your trick! I was deeply touched and yes, the cupcakes are delicious.
When the month I've been waiting for all year is finally here, it's time to packed my suitcase and fly to the UK! It still felt surreal to know that I am able to fly to the UK just to attend the event. The best part is? Everything is sponsored for! All thanks to Photoshop! Being in the UK was surprisingly normal actually. hahaha. The first thing I do when arriving at the airport, is to find an exit to experience the cold.
As everything was free and easy, I felt free and easy too. The atmosphere there is just purely relaxing and they really living a laidback life. Interacting with other artists from different country was also very exciting.
Living alone in the UK for 10 days was like a dream come true! I slept in a room of silence, never on my heater and a very soft pillow and a fluffy blanket. That was home momentarily.
Did I mention, that everyday we have to walk?! Basically, the main town area is where they serve food in the morning and for dinner. So from our dorm, we would walk about 20-30 mins to the Nottingham Castle to start our day. If we're lazy, we would take a bus that cost us 1.60 pound and 3 Pound for a day ride.
Having my artwork showcased there was a bonus! I almost forgot the excitement of my working being shown as i was too caught-up with the experience of being in Nottingham. I would definitely go back to Nottingham for a holiday! Nottingham is all connected and every shopping malls are of walking distance.
London is just a 3 hour train ride away from Nottingham, so taking a day-trip to London is a no brainer. I don't want to waste such golden opportunity that come ones in a lifetime. Going to london alone felt so unreal and yet surreal. Upon reaching London, I bought a day pass for the underground train for 7 pounds. Getting around places was so easy, I totally felt like I've been living in london for years. hahaha.
The picture below right here just summarize this whole year. Serving NS but still going places that I never thought I could imagine. Tower Bridge at the back by the way.
Meanwhile back in Singapore, there's an exhibition which I participated in called Pameran Poskad. I decided these experimental design which I did in camp all year round for the show but none weren't sold. Thanks to Bali and Nadhir for the photos.
I belong to S4 Branch. All we ever do is use the computer after a while and the rest of the day we do stupid things like playing ping pong, Monopoly Deal or better still, sleep. We had our cohesion over food at Seoul Garden. It's nice to hang out together outside of work and just chill and eat.
On October, I went to the Universal Studio for the second time. Yes, I am that kind of guy who's afraid of heights and stuffs so going on a roller coaster was not an option. Well the indoors one are okay for me but still I'm scared the hell out, especially the Mummy ride. The transformers was not that scary but it was fun!
Somehow I loved to play those rides again and again but a part of me is scared and I know I do want to overcome my fear and this will not be the last time you see me at USS.
Cohesion like these are the ones I appreciate the most. Doing what real boys do, like playing football is incomparable to any sports. More cohesions to come before I ORD.
My facial code series was the only work that was showcased at the annual SIF exhibition where they would exhibit all the works they have sponsored for the year. Luckily, my work is the only one they shown to represent the World Event Young Artist for SCYA. This year have been a year where I moved my artwork alot and guess what, public transport is my weapon of choice! Imagine me carrying a large image of a group of people with their faces covered with QR codes! That is totally normal.
December was mainly an holiday month for me. Bangkok was the destination and shopping was the primary purpose! Everything was dirt cheap and good. We have no trouble finding halal food and shopping was abundant. I managed to bring home about 10 tops and 4 pants and 2 shoes. It may not sounds like a lot but to me it was something!
It's always fun being able to get on an aeroplane and fly to another country and just being able to see the world. I always appreciate travelling and I don't wear shades because I want to see everything with my own eyes. But on certain occasion, I do keep the shades on for keeping cool effect.
Our hotel was small and cozy. A big shout out to edmund for sharing the same bed as me and hitting me a few occasion at night. But it was all good.
The land where the king is god, it's no wonder the king's picture is everywhere. Anyway the king and I share a common interest, Photography! There was an exhibition at Siam Paragon where pictures the king took was showcase and I was impressed. Long live the King of Thailand.
I would definitely go to Thailand anytime of the year. I think the idea of shopping at Bangkok once a year is an awesome fantastic one! Tuk Tuk is indeed scary.
In summary, the year 2012 has been a crazy year but an exciting one. I forgot to mention something. My application for NTU have been successful! I can't wait for the year 2013 so I can start my journey to the west, I'm already in the west though, a couple of more west! 2012 is a year of ups and down and that is why I refuse to take the roller coaster at USS. I would like to seek forgiveness to those I've hurt with my words and to my family, I love you guys and you've been my strength all this while. To my one and only love, you're my pillar of strength and let's conquer 2013!
